It is with great sadness that I heard of the death of trumpet legend Derek Watkins this evening. Whilst I don’t know exact details my thoughts are with his family at this time.
The wider trumpet community in particular will be feeling this loss of a much loved, talented and well respected teacher and colleague.
Derek inspired many young trumpet players including myself and was still at the top of his profession. Last year he played on the soundtrack of the latest Bond film. Watch a clip of the recording session here.
It is well known that Derek was fighting a brave battle against cancer but even though he was diagnosed, after treatment he continued to work.
He was also one half of the team that created the Smith-Watkins trumpet range that many players now use, me being one of them. I’m very grateful that Derek spent much time with Richard Smith developing this instrument as it’s truly one of the best out there.
Thank you Derek for enriching so many of our lives with your kind heartedness and your wonderful playing. You will be sorely missed by your family, colleagues, friends, students and those who loved to listen to your playing. RIP
